331: A LARGE 1849 LONDON STERLING SILVER TIPPING KETTLE

The large, bulbous, paneled, rococo influence kettle with hand chased and repoussé decoration of fruit, foliage, 'C' scrolls and central medallions in high relief is raised on an elaborate openwork stand with lion masks. The hallmarks for sterling, London, 1848 and the maker's mark of Charles Riley George Storer, along with the sovereign are found in a number of places on the kettle and stand.
Measures 16.5 x 11.5 x 8.5 with a weight of 74.55 ozt.
Very good condition throughout, no damage, repair or heavy wear. The family name, Bird, is engraved in a number of places as shown.
Provenance: The collection of Josephine Bird Hall (1888 - 1948) by descent to her son, the present owner. Josephine's father was a founder of Kansas City's Emery, Bird, Thayer Department Store.
