5216: MANNER OF LOIS MAILOU JONES (1905-1998) OIL/CANVAS BOARD

The skillfully rendered oil on canvas-covered artist's board depicts a Black gentleman in Western attire seated on the steps of a clapboard structure in a tropical climate.

The work, though by an accomplished artist, is without a signature or any other markings that would suggest an attribution and there is no significant provenance.

The argument for an attribution is based on various factors:

1. The way the figure is depicted, the handling of the shirt collar and the black outline of the forearms and the way the rms intersect with the shirt sleeves all resemble known portraits by Lois Mailou Jones. See Seated Man in Yellow Overalls, Smithsonian American Art Museum.

2. The canvas-covered artist's board, a support often used by by Lois Mailou Jones, bears a Boston supplier's stamp. The address is approximately 2 miles from her home in the Roxbury area of Boston.

3. Lois Mailou Jones spent time on the Caribbean island of Haiti in the 1950s.
Board measures 24H x 19.75W inches.
Fair condition with the effects of exposure to dampness along the lower edge, scattered bits of medium loss across the lower half, scattered blush and uneveness of surface.
