Paint on cloth and stitched cotton with chenille effect signed in marker verso and inscribed, 'For Jack O'Shea Because His Help Was Very Important.'

Alan Shields was raised on a farm in Kansas where he learned sewing and needlework from his mother and sisters. He studied art and theater at Kansas State University from 1963 until 1966 when, on the advice of his art professor John O'Shea, he left university before graduating to pursue his career as an artist. Shields stayed in touch with his old professor and spoke at an event for John O'Shea's retirement.
The work measures 6 x 26.5 with a framed size of 12.5 x 32.5 inches.
Very good original untouched condition. There are no issues. The work is mounted using Velcro, per the artist's instructions in red marker verso.
Provenance: The estate of John W. O'Shea, Professor of Art Kansas State University 1956 to 2001.
