STANLEY J. HERD (B. 1950 KANSAS) PENCIL SIGNED LITHO

120: STANLEY J. HERD (B. 1950 KANSAS) PENCIL SIGNED LITHO

Stanley James Herd (Kansas, Born 1950)
Hudson River Site (1994)
The lithograph on Arches watermarked paper is numbered 15 from an edition of 60 prints signed and dated by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and titled lower left.

Kansan Stanley Herd is best known as a crop artist. His multi-acre portraits and other compositions have garnered him acclaim worldwide.

This lithograph was published as a fundraising effort to finance one of Mr. Herd's most challenging projects: a plot of crop art titled Countryside in New York City. The plot of ground used for the earth work (there aren't many acre plots available in Manhattan) was site of the old Penn Street Station and owned by Donald Trump, who leased it to the artist for free. There were a few other benefactors who donated to the project, and some local homeless volunteered their labor. But the bulk of the funds came from the sale of this lithograph - and out of the artist's own pocket.

Countryside was created using, ...''200 tons of topsoil were put down, plus 20 tons of rock; 5,000 plants like squash, watermelon, cucumbers, cantaloupes, tomatoes and pumpkins; 2,000 flowering plants like impatiens and mums, as well as crops of rye grass, corn, soybeans and wheat.''
Image measures 17.75 x 15, sheet is 26 x 20, and frame is 28 x 25 inches.
Very good to fine condition, the full untrimmed sheet, not laid down, no damage, stain, punctures, tears or repair; framed to archival standards in acid free mounts.
Provenance: The private collection of a Clay County Circuit Court Judge
