Accusing the subject ''adapted, devised and designed ''

The indictment in Cole County reads:

''STATE OF MISSOURI, County of Cole, In the Circuit Court, June Term 1841.

The Grand Jurors for the State of Missouri, for the body of the County of Cole aforesaid, upon their oath present THAT, William C. Hunt late of the County aforesaid, on the first day of June in the year of our Lord, One Thousand Eight Hundred and forty one, with force and arms at the County of Cole aforesaid, unlawfully did bet a large sum of money, to wit The sum of five Dollars, at and upon a certain game of chance then and there played, called Cards and then and there played at and upon a certain gambling device, called Cards, adapted, devised and designed for the purpose of playing games of Chance, for Money and Property, contrary to the form of the Statue, in that case made and provided, and against the peace and dignity of the State.
