8: UNWASHED 1840s POLISHED CHINTZ MARINER'S COMPASS QUILT

The thirty sharply-serrated compass pattern blocks with polished chintz borders is elaborately hand quilted with homespun backing. A note states that this quilt was, ...''quilted with thrumbs...'' in Virginia.
Measures 102 x 88 inches.
Very good condition, noting toning and scattered storage stains, some tatters to a particular dark brown fabric in a couple of blocks, made brittle by the brown dyes of the period.
