The American Studio Pottery movement really began to gain traction in the 1930s, just as Sheldon Carey was graduating from Alfred University, America's premier university for ceramics studies. Number two on that list of leading institutions would be the Rhode Island School of Design where Carey taught ceramics in 1942 and 1943, before heading up the ceramics department at the University of Kansas for 32 years.

The end of World War ushered in the era most associated with American Modern Design and studio ceramics. This period also saw a shift away from industrial production of factory-made ceramics toward individual craftsmanship and artistic expression. Sheldon Carey was a quiet, Midwestern example of this movement, working at the grass roots level. Original, prolific and skilled, he could be regarded as a sort of Regionalist in Modernist Studio Ceramics.
Measures 7, 10.5, and 12.5 inches.
Very good condition. There are no chips, cracks, repairs, scratches or areas of heavy wear.
