The American school landscape is signed lower right front and displayed in its original frame with an important label pasted verso. The label from an unidentified event dates to the 19th century, the location of the exhibition is New York, the title of the entry is fully legible as noted above, the artist's name is intact on the line that reads 'Member's Name.'

Records show that Thomas Addison Richards exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the Brooklyn Art Association. He painted in the Catskill Mountains, the American West, Europe, and, most notably, the American South - specifically Georgia and South Carolina. For Southern subjects he is most recognized and a most important figure in American art. Far fewer artists documented Georgia and South Carolina than did the Catskills and the American West.

Richards' views of the Catskills and the western United States include mountains. His European views often include castles. This landscape includes neither of those, but most resembles the flora and style of the artist's Southern landscapes.
Canvas measures 16 x 25 with a framed size of 27.75 x 36.75 inches.
Very good condition, noting one dime-sized area of inpainting near the right edge.
