124: A PERSIAN BIJAR CARPET WITH ROSES CIRCA 1920

The red field centered by a two-tone blue strapwork medallion and supported by meandering vines issuing palmettes, flower heads and leaves has a blue arabesque scroll and gol farangi spandrels, all within a blue border enclosing continuous curvilinear scrolling vines issuing gol farangi all in a rich and jewel-like in Bijar palette. Gol farangi translates roughly to foreign flower, a term linked to the historical appearance in Persian weavings of roses and floral sprays in motifs derived from European textiles of the 18th century,
Measures 87 x 56 inches.
Nice intact original sides and ends, even overall, thick pile. No damage, repair, mothing or odor. Very good, noting two bits of loss to the edge wrap near one corner where there is also a black stain measuring 1 x 2 inches and another 1 x 1 inches.
Provenance: Phil Martin Estate. Phil's interest in Persian and Caucasian weavings began in the 1980's when he met Michael Grogan, who was still with Sotheby's at the time.
