The circa 1935 photograph of Marie Martinez with her sister Desideria beside a monumental stone-polished pot is stamped by the photographer verso and the title is inscribed in graphite back side of the mount.

Mario Scacheri was an Italian-born photographer, author and columnist who emigrated to America in the 1920s. In 1933, he moved from Seattle to Chicago and became staff photographer for the weekly newspaper of the 1933 World's Fair. While living in Chicago, he met his wife Mabel Delameter, a reporter for the Chicago Evening American. By 1936, he and Mabel were living in Manhattan where Mario worked as photographer and camera editor for the New York World Telegram, He also edited one of the first ever weekly newspaper columns to educate the public on the art and hobby of photography. It was around this same time that the Scacheri's published their first book Indians Today, which was filled with with photographs documenting the daily lives and customs of Pueblo Indians in the American West. They would go on to write and illustrate several other books on photography and Native Americans, filling them with their images. Three of those titles, THE FUN OF PHOTOGRAPHY, WINNEBAGO BOY and INDIANS TODAY, are included with a second Scacheri image (a portrait of Marie's husband Julian) up for bid in this auction.

Very good condition, there are no surface rubs, scratches, staining, or recognizable fade.
