59: BENJAMIN CHEE (1944-1977) OIL ON CANVAS POD OF WHALES

Benjamin Chee Chee (Ojibwa, 1944-1977)
(1973)
The oil on canvas of whales against an abstracted ocean and sun on the horizon, signed lower left, was purchased directly from the artist in Montreal in 1973. This painting is on canvas and not mounted to stretchers.

Chee Chee is widely recognized for his elegant, minimalist depictions that remain fundamentally connected to traditional indigenous art, both in style and subject matter, despite the artist's modernist approach.

His works are held in the National Gallery of Canada and the McMichael Canadian Art Collection.
The canvas measures 13 x 16.5 inches.
Very good condition, noting that this painting is on canvas and not mounted to stretchers.
