115: A RARE C.W. PARKER IRON WHIPPET SHOOTING GALLERY TARGET
This rare cast iron shooting gallery target cast by C.W. Parker of Abilene, Kansas was in service at the Pontchartrain Beach Amusement Park in New Orleans. In early 20th century shooting galleries, this whippet generally zipped along a rail in pursuit of a rabbit of similar size and shape, also in full stride.
The maker's mark MANUF BY C.W. PARKER ABILENE KANSAS is embossed in the casting back side.
This target dates to the early 20th century. C.W. Parker moved from Abilene to Leavenworth around 1911.
The surface on this piece displays one thin layer of black paint, similar to the 'Japanned' finishes of the day. There are no areas of updated repaint or 'Park Paint' added later.
See page 12 of C. W. Parker's Catalogue of Shooting Galleries, Gallery No. 20 for reference.
Measures 8.25 x x 27 inches.
Very good condition with surface issues consistent with age, usage and material. There are no issues of damage or repair.
$6,000 - $8,000
