100: MARIA MARTINEZ (1887-1980) POLISHED PLATE WITH FEATHERS
Maria Montoya Poveka Martinez (1887-1980)
Plate with Stylized Feather Repeat (Third quarter of the 20th century.)
The classic example of San Ildefonso Pueblo black-on-black pottery is signed Maria and Popovi Da.
This type of pottery decoration was revived and perfected by Maria Martinez (1887-1980) and her son Popovi Da (1923-1971). This particular piece featuring a matte-on-polished feather design of a modernist repeating feather band was the contribution of Popovi Da. It is among the most iconic forms the duo produced during their collaboration from the 1950s until Popovi's death in 1971.
