180: GEORGE BELLOWS (1882-1925) PENCIL SIGNED LITHOGRAPH
George Wesley Bellows (1882-1925)
In an elevator (1916)
The lithograph, numbered 18 in an unknown edition of prints, is signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and titled lower center. Unframed.
George Bellows and his fellow Ashcan artists depicted the raw, everyday life of working class neigborhoods in early 20th century New York.
The Cleveland Museum of Art provides an insightful description: ''Elevators, in 1916 as today, often inspired awkward social interactions. George Bellows himself described this print as a ''study of the relation of a nun to society.'' The Old World European values and modesty of the nun contrast to the younger, more boisterous passengers, who give wide berth to her dominating physical and moral presence.''
Image measures 10 x 8, sheet is 16H x 12W inches.
Very good condition, the full untrimmed sheet with deckle edges, not laid down, no damage, stain, punctures, tears or repair.
Provenance: From a private collection in Fayetteville, Ark, acquired from the estate of New York art dealer Eric Carlson via Swann Auction Galleries, NYC.
