129: MATT SMITH (B. 1960) AUTUMN COTTONWOODS OIL ON PANEL
Matt Read Smith (Born 1960)
Autumn Cottonwood (1995)
The view of mountain cottonwoods in autumn golds is signed lower left front.
Born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1960, Matt Smith moved to Arizona at a young age. His formative years included time in France and Switzerland, experiences that exposed him to European art traditions and further fueled his passion for painting.
He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from Arizona State University in 1985. Dissatisfied with the program's abstract focus he sought inspiration from traditional landscape masters such as Maynard Dixon, William Herbert Dunton, and Edgar Payne. This self-directed study influenced his commitment to classical landscape painting.
Primarily painting en plein air, as with the painting up for bid here, Smith travels to the Canadian Rockies, and from the California coast to the Colorado mountains in search of unspoiled locales to paint.
Matt Smith's work has been featured in numerous prestigious exhibitions, including the Prix de West at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, where he received the Robert Lougheed Memorial Award, and Best of Show and Merit Awards at the Western Rendezvous of Art.
Board measures 10 x 12 with a framed size of 15H x 17W inches.
