The study of horses near a barn in the slanted sunlight of morning or evening is signed lower right front and is displayed in a simple wood molding of the period, likely original to the work.

Note the striking similarities between this work and a Clayton Sumner Price painting from the collection of Price's friend and fellow artist Armin Hansen. That painting, recently sold for $35,840.00, was the same size and composition as seen here.

In May 1925, Hansen and Price were among the artists who exhibited at Hagemeyer Studio-Gallery in Carmel as part of the ''Monterey Group,'' a collective of artists who were former students of Armin Hansen. Price had studied under Hansen for approximately two years, and they shared a studio, during which time he absorbed Hansen's emphasis on capturing the essence of subjects rather than detailed realism - again as seen in the work up for bid here.

Clayton Sumner Price was born in Bedford, Iowa and spent his early years on farms and ranches in Iowa, Wyoming, and Alberta, Canada. He often chose horses as his subjects, like in this painting, striving to depict their inner character rather than just their physical form.

In 1905, at the age of 31, he received financial support from a local rancher to attend the St. Louis School of Fine Arts. He studied there for only one academic year but it provided him with a strong foundation of artistic training. Around this same time, he purportedly met and was encouraged by the renowned Western artist Charles Marion Russell.
Board measures 10 x 12.5 with a framed size of 10.75H x 13.5W inches.
