Kalman Kubinyi (1906-1973) And Doris Hall Kubinyi (1907-2000)
Beauport (Circa 1953)
The brightly colored Modernist, somewhat surrealist, enamel and copper plaque is accompanied by an exhibition label from The Cleveland Museum of Art May Show for 1953. Doris Kubinyi was a renown enamelist who, around 1940, built her own kiln and began a collaboration with her husband to create their opaque enamels on copper. She was a 1928 graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art and won first prize in enamels at the Cleveland Museum's May show of 1948.
The May Show was a juried exhibition at the museum that ran from 1919 through 1993. It offered critical exposure and cash prizes for Northeast Ohio artists. Kalman and Doris Kubinyi were awarded several May Club awards.
Kalman Kubinyi graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1927, co-founded the tastemaking Cleveland Printmaker's Club and headed up the Cleveland WPA graphic arts project.
