Signed Kayali and dated 1963 lower left front, signed Louay Kayali verso with the inscription Malula ''Siria'' and date of 1963 in English and Arabic.
Provenance; Descended from Dr. Anthony W. Zaitz to his son, the current owner.
Dr. Zaitz was a a military leader and academic administrator. In WWII he flew with with the 438th Troop Carrier Group, specifically the 87th Troop Carrier Squadron, part of the 9th Air Force, which was a key logistics and tactical support unit in Europe. He took an active role in the D-Day airborne operations, serving as a combat intelligence officer.
After the war he was a charter faculty member at the University of South Florida before leaving for two years in order to fill a Fulbright professorship at the University of Damascus where, according to his son, he became acquainted with Louay Kayali. This painting has remained in the family since that time.
Overall framed size measures 38.5 x 30.5 inches.
Very good original untouched condition. There are no issues of major scratches, losses, repairs, in-painting or touch-up. There is typical overall craquelure.
