159: A GOOD LAKOTA PICTORIAL BEADED HIDE TOBACCO BAG C. 1890
The beaded and quilled hide Lakota tobacco bag is decorated with a figurative pictorial panel of lane stitched glass and metal beads depicting a Native American with headdress on horseback. The bag's upper is trimmed in multicolor beading against white, below the pictorial panel are vertical hide strips finished in dyed and undyed porcupine quillwork.
Measures 33 x 8 inches, including the fringe.
Good to very good condition, noting a tear on one side of upper could use stabilization, a short tear at the top and one 2-inch tear close by, an old sinew sewn repair or area of construction, no bead loss, extremely minor quill loss near the top of some strands.
Provenance: The estate of a Wyoming collector.
