247: CHARLES BANKS WILSON (1918-2013) RARE 1939 LITHOGRAPH
Charles Banks Wilson (1918-2013)
Dance Drum (1939)
The early, very rare, lithograph published in a very low edition of only 10 prints is signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and titled lower left, Hunt catalog raisonné number 5. Unframed.
In his catalog on the prints of Charles Banks Wilson, David Hunt wrote, 'Representing Indians from different cultural backgrounds, this print proved to be prophetic of the amalgamation of tribal ceremonies that occurred decades later. '
Wilson commented: ''I saw the drum as a unifying element for people of a divided heritage. The big hat represents Oklahoma; the Pueblo haircut and the Navajo headband the Southwest; the overalled figure the East; and the buffalo headdress the Far West. Yet all are singing the same song.''
Image measures 12.75 x 8.25, sheet is 15.75 x 11 inches.
Very good condition, the full untrimmed sheet with deckle edges, not laid down, no damage, stain, punctures, tears or repair. This print has never been framed. There is faint toning from storage along the extreme lower edge.
Provenance: Living estate, Overland Park, Kansas.
