113: JOHANN GRUND (1808-1887) OIL ON CANVAS - ROME 1847
Johann Grund (1808-1887)
Untitled (Classical Maiden) (1847)
The neoclassical canvas in warm reds, greens and golden tones is signed and dated lower left and identified by a plaque on the 19th century frame. The semi-clad figure, perhaps a personification of nature, abundance, or subject of Grand Tour theme - a goddess from classical mythology - offers red fruit from her hand, if not herself. The expansive landscape behind her with rolling hills, a body of water, and distant mountains under a hazy, golden sky skillfully adds depth and distance to the composition. The light, depicted as coming from left to right, warmly illuminates the figure as well as the pumpkin, fruit and large lily at her side. The overall result is a finely executed work of classic serenity.
Canvas measures 43 x 51 with a framed size of 47.75 x 55.5 inches.
Very good condition. The canvas has been relined but there are absolutely no areas of inpainting, touch-up or repair, no scratches, losses, cupping or chips. Older, perhaps slightly yellowed varnish, original stretchers.
