80: GEORGE CROSKEY (1917-2006) RARELY SEEN OIL ON MASONITE
George Thomas Croskey (Kansas City, 1917-2006)
Untitled (Trackside Industrial Scene) (Circa 1946)
George Croskey served in the U.S. Army during WWII with assignments in England, France, and Germany. After the war, he earned a Master's degree in painting from the Kansas City Art Institute and went on to receive another master's in theater from the University of Missouri. In 2004, he donated 40 pieces of his art collection to Park University, otherwise, his work as an easel painter is unknown. This is the first known example of his work outside that group of 40 and the first to appear at auction. The work dates to Croskey's time at the Kansas City Art Institute and is signed lower right.
It could best be described as Expressionist Regionalism. Its Midwestern Regionalism roots and subject matter departs from strict Regionalism through its modernist abstraction and expressionist use of color.
Board measures 25 x 31 with a framed size of 30.75 x 36.75 inches.
Very good original untouched condition. There are no issues of major scratches, losses, repairs, in-painting or touch-up.
