189: JACQUES AND MARY REGAT 20/21ST C.) FIRST NATION BRONZE
Jacques & Mary Regat (Alaska 20/21st Century)
Fog Woman (Late 20th Century)
The richly patinated bronze sculpture is an allegory for the native American story of Salmon and their origin. The work is signed within the casting and numbered 9 from only 20 made. Purchase receipts and supporting documents, including a certificate of title, are included.
According to Tlingit tradition, Fog Woman was a supernatural figure who brought the first salmon. From her basket she drew endless fish, teaching the people how to preserve them. When insulted by her husband, she returned to the sea and released the salmon into the waters, where they became her children. Each year, the salmon return to the rivers to visit Fog Woman's former home, renewing her gift to the people. The recurring salmon runs, and the fog that rolls inland from the ocean, are reminders of her presence and of the respect owed to her and to the salmon.
