162: A NAVAJO THIRD PHASE CHIEF'S BLANKET DESIGN WEAVING
The weaving, executed in the traditional 3rd phase design of horizontal bands interrupted by serrated diamonds and half-diamonds, has an interesting blue black yarn worked in with the horizontal bands in dark brown. Serrated designs like those seen here began to appear in Navajo blankets circa 1860 to the 1880s. Revival pieces in the same design were made in the 1920s.
Measures 69 x 55.5 inches.
Good condition, edge fraying and breaks as shown, scattered areas of thinning, to the degree of a small opening in one instance, old repair near one serrated half-diamond. No stain or odor.
Provenance: Living estate, Des Moines, Iowa.
