213: A NAVAJO RUG WITH STEPPED DIAMONDS AND WHIRLING LOGS
The four-color weaving with narrow outer border has two central floating medallions and two half-medallions within a stepped hourglass. The field is centered by a simple understated cross woven in dark brown, near black, wool; the only part of the design woven in that color. Two medallions are centered by the ancient Navajo 'Whirling Logs' motif, a sacred symbol of balance and blessing.
Measures 67 x 53 inches.
Good condition with largely intact sides. One small hole and a 3-inch break at the edge of one medallion where red and ivory meet, two groups of small spotting patterns, very minor red bleed in just two areas. Intact sides and ends.
Provenance: Living estate, Des Moines, Iowa.
