137: A MEXICAN STERLING SILVER TEA SET OF TRADITIONAL DESIGN

A large, heavy, handsome, hand-crafted six-piece sterling silver tea set purchased in Mexico circa 1960. The design displays traditional Mexican silversmith influences similar to those of popular designers in Taxco and Mexico City, with the exception of the handles which are borrowed directly from European designs of the last 200 years. The maker is unknown. Stamped marks on each piece include the words and standards REAL .925 STERLING 255 along with the Mexican Eagle assay mark number 18. Mexican silver mark researcher Phyllis Goddard questions whether or not the eagle mark number 18 may be associated with silversmith 'Antonio' (Antonio Pineda of Taxco). The tray measures 18 x 29, coffee pot 9 inches, teapot 7.56 inches, creamer 5.5 inches, sugar 6 inches, waste jar 5 inches. Total weight 228.25 ozt.
Excellent condition throughout. There are no issues of damage, repair or wear. There are no monograms.
