273: C. 1839 FUSEE WATCH WITH 'NORRIS 4-2-0' LOCOMOTIVE DIAL

A fine silver pair cased verge fusee pocket watch signed Welch, housed in a Birmingham sterling silver case with date mark of 1839, the hand painted dial is a depiction of an 1830s passenger train with riders pulled by a locomotive that, by the artist's depiction, very closely resembles a Norris 4-2-0 made in Philadelphia from the 1830s to the 1860s. The fusee movement with hand cut saw-1237d balance cock, engraved plate, and engraved lettering of 'Jas Welch Houghton les Spring 158'. The dial measures 1 7/8 inches, the movement measures 1 5/8 inches, the case measures 2.25 inches outside diameter.
Very good condition, especially the dial which is free from damage with the exception of minor roughness at the extreme edge of the porcelain enamel dial outside the 10 o'clock and 4 o'clock positions. Winds and runs, no key at the time of cataloging though the consignor may produce one.
