34: A VERY GOOD EARLY 19TH CENTURY MISSOURI WAR AXE

The forged blade measuring 5 19/32 inches x 9 15/16 inches is formed with a circular end having horizontal and vertical ribs joining the blade with openwork designs of a cross of four circular openings joined by stamped dots above a heart shape opening and a chevron at the wide end of the blade; the smooth dark wood handle with very good patina is decorated with twenty-two brass head tacks having square forged iron shafts (a tack that was missing it's head has been removed from the handle and included in the images here to confirm that the shaft of all the tacks is a square forged shaft), the lower end of the handle is cut to form a tapered end.

Not enough is known about the history of this axe. It, along with the pipe tomahawk axe in this auction, were purchased at a Kansas City, Missouri estate sale in the 1980s.
Measures 39.5 x 13.75 inches.
Very good condition, noting the effects of age and carry as expected, scattered missing tacks and wear.
