A PAIR EARLY 20C NEOCLASSICAL CARVED MARBLE BENCHES

250: A PAIR EARLY 20C NEOCLASSICAL CARVED MARBLE BENCHES

The match pair of garden benches or stools are each arranged in three pieces. The flat bench top, with carved egg-and-dart edge, is supported by two standards modeled after table supports from the House of Cornelius Rufus 1st century BC to 1st century AD, now on display in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. The carved marble supports in the form of back-to-back winged griffins are positioned like caryatids with a single large paw foot having carved claws. Circa 1900.
Each measures 17.5 x 23 x 17 inches.
Good to very good condition overall. One support has been broken lengthwise and repaired, one has a large chip on the upper edge hidden by the top when it is in place, four wings have either a chip or a crack, the tops are soiled and weathered.
