A GEORG JENSEN 17A BOWL ON STAND WITH RARE COVER

389: A GEORG JENSEN 17A BOWL ON STAND WITH RARE COVER

The hammered and sculpted sterling silver Johan Rohde design number 17a for Georg Jensen, typically found as an open compote, or bowl on stand, is found here with a scarce matching cover topped by a blossom finial and numbered 2A. The ladle number 21 is included and the firm's maker's marks date these to before 1932.

Of this handiwork the French art critic Pierre Lahalle wrote, 'It is by means of a discrete hammering of the smooth surfaces that George Jensen's work achieves its incomparable beauty; this bright vibration in the silver subdues it's excessive gloss, removes every thought of mechanical labor, reveals the hand of the worker…'
Measures 5.5 x 4.5 inches, ladle is 5.5 inches, total weight 10.60 ozt.
Engraved dedication of JBH 1938 inside the cover and tow minor dents in the folded rim of the cover. Otherwise very good condition. There are no other monograms; no other dents, no repairs, scratches or areas of heavy wear.
Provenance: The collection of Josephine Bird Hall (1888 - 1948) by descent to her son, the present owner. Josephine's father was a founder of Kansas City's Emery, Bird, Thayer Department Store.
