A SCARCE WILLIAM SPRATLING SILVER BROOCH STAMPED 980

5761: A SCARCE WILLIAM SPRATLING SILVER BROOCH STAMPED 980

The openwork design of stylized snake motifs in a Greek key like meander surrounded by geometric cut-outs is apparently inspired by the very similar design of a circa 1400-1519 Pre-Columbian clay stamp found in Mexico. The silver work is stamped TAXCO 980 along with the Spratling hallmark.

Taxco silver stamped 980 is thought to have been produced prior to 1950.
Measures 1.5 x 2.25 inches and weighs 0.7 ozt.
Very good condition throughout, noting that the fastening pin is slightly bent as shown, there are no issues of damage, repair or heavy wear.
Provenance: The Susan Koehn Estate Trust - Newton, Kansas
