A 1930s FOLK ART TOY ATTRIBUTED TO A KANSAS INMATE

3: A 1930s FOLK ART TOY ATTRIBUTED TO A KANSAS INMATE

The animated figure of a performing monkey with tack eye and a red fez is carved from walnut and articulated on simple brass fittings. The red fez has a nice original alligatored finish. Similar objects were commonly produced by inmates, but this particular example has a characteristic very similar to another object identified as having been carved by an inmate in the Kansas State Penitentiary at Lansing. At the base of the upright is a supporting block with stipple carving of the very same style as areas of other 1930s Kansas State Penitentiary inmate carvings. See lot one in this catalog.
Measures 16 x 13.25 x 6 inches.
Very good original condition, there are no issues of damage or repair.
Provenance: The Estate of the Legendary Collector J. Loyd Davis, Prairie Village, KS.
