23: A MASSIVE EARLY 20TH CENTURY INUIT WHALEBONE CARVING

The large half-round section of bone displays Native subject matter in three different techniques. In addition to the two-sided figure that surmounts the piece, seals and ptarmigans are incised on one side while numerous, well-executed depictions of walruses, bears and hunters in full stride or at various activities are carved in bas relief on the other. A whale is depicted vertically along one side.
Measures 23.25 x 18 x 12 inches.
