133: 3000+ PIECE ARCHIVE OF EARLY 20C. SUFFRAGETTE ALMA NASH

This archive includes an album with circa 1912-1913 postcards and clippings documenting the 1913 Woman Suffrage Procession parade in Washington, D.C. on March 3, 1913 demanding the vote for women. One quote from the materials: 'One woman, who was Marshall of the crowd of young girls spoke to a police officer and asked if he could not make the crowd go back. He replied, 'You are the one who wants votes for women, you are the one to push them back.'

In another quote, a man yelled to one of the suffragists, 'You don't look like a suffragette to me, sister.' 'Why not?' she asked. 'You got too many yellow curls to be worrying about votes,' said the candid stranger. Other accounts of the day confirmed that the crowd nearly got out of hand and that things were tense and some sources credit Alma Nash and her band for calming the situation as they began playing at the head of the parade. An original program from that event in 1913 is included here, along with 'real photo' post cards, photographs, ephemera and possibly more to be discovered in this very large and unsorted archive.

Plus many photographs related to the movement and Senate report from May 29, 1913 related to suffragists activities.

Many pieces (1000s?) relate to the annual convention of American Guild of Banjoists, Mandolinists and Guitarists dating back to the 1920s and 30s, including broadsides, programs, and correspondence. Alma Nash was a very involved member of the organization for decades and saved all related memorabilia and correspondence.

There are stacks and stacks of letters in their original envelope between Ms. Nash and any number of different music companies and instrument makers of the day. One random letter picked from the hundreds is on fancy Gibson Inc. letterhead dated 1926 and begins, 'Thanks for arranging for a reservation of room C for our exhibit at the Guild Convention ...'

Hundreds, if not thousands, of letters between Alma Nash and hotels, music companies, music company executives, instrument dealers, students, colleagues, even personal affairs regarding loans and issues with local government or utilities.

There is a large stack of unused letterhead for the Plunker Chord Company which lists Marion Bradbury and Alma M Nash as principles who deal in instruments, cord charts, and more, serving as representatives for a number of music companies listed on the right hand side. Verbiage along the bottom edge advertises that, 'We are members of the American Guild of Banjoists, Mandolinists and Guitarists.

Many early 20th century promotional brochures for a number of music and theater related events and industries, plus advertising pieces for the ALMARION School of Fretted Instruments at 3110 Brooklyn Ave., Kansas City, Mo for which Alma Nash and Marion Bradbury are co-owners - one of the pair's numerous musical enterprises.

Glass magic lantern slide advertising Alma M. Nash Music lessons at a cost of 6 1/2 to 16 2/3 cents per day.

Printers blocks related to advertisements and photogravures related to Alma Nash enterprises and advertisements.

Several Alma M Nash membership cards for the Kansas City Musicians Association prior to 1920.

From earlier in her career, an entire album related to the time that Alma Nash spent with Helen May Butler and her Ladies Military Band circa 1904. Included are letters between Alma and her parents during this time period. In one, Alma's father Dr. Nash expresses how sorry he is that Miss Butler is having trouble financially with the tour and if things go badly, everyone can come live with the Nash family in their home until things improve.

An album of letters covering 1908 to 1911, including small photo albums, programs, broad sides and an invitation for Miss Nash to join a 15 piece orchestra for a four weeks engagement in Havana Cuba opening January 15.

Included are many personal items including correspondence pieces by the hundreds related to Kansas City's Petticoat Lane stores like the Jones store, the J. W. Jenkins and Sons Music Company, Farmers Trust in Maryville Missouri, income tax return for 1922, items with letterhead and stamps from Kansas City's Priests of Pallas parade.

The archive covers four tables, each eight feet long.
