16: RONALD SLOWINSKI (1932-2023) ACRYLIC ON CANVAS

Ron Slowinski (1932-2023)
(Untitled) Pollen Series (1979)
The grid-based acrylic on canvas with sanded field and the exuberantly random applications is signed and dated verso.

Ron Slowinski produced several distinct series of related works during his career. This painting from his Pollen series demonstrates the artist's skill at creating a seemingly woven fabric-like texture with the illusion of floating touches and patterns in unique colors and shades, all with a play of light that altogether gives a pensive elegance.

Pollen, especially that of the corn plant, is considered sacred in most Native American cultures. Ron's canvases from this series gently pulsate with the associated light, spirituality and floating energy of pollen in nature and indigenous culture.

Of his Pollen series, Ron said 'The Pollen Series paintings reflect my ongoing interest in surface, color and light. In Navajo religion pollen is a symbol for the life-giving quality of light.'

Ron Slowinski was professor of drawing and painting at the Kansas City Art Institute for 39 years. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, earning a Certificate of Art in painting in 1954. During the early 1950s, he became involved with a group of fellow abstract expressionist artists in Chicago and co-founded the groundbreaking Wells Street Gallery, where he held his first solo exhibition in 1957.

Throughout his career, Ron participated in more than 60 exhibitions across the United States and Japan, including at the Nelson-Atkins Museum. His work is held in numerous public and private collections, including the Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska, which presented a retrospective of his paintings in 1984.
