13: JESSE REICHEK (1916-2005) 1948 ABSTRACT OIL ON CANVAS
Jesse Reichek (1916-2005)
Untitled (1948)
The bold and brightly colored abstract composition is signed and dated lower right.
Jesse Reichek was an interesting artist and engineer who often melded the two, as seen here- and when he collaborated with IBM through the Art and Technology Program, merging traditional art with early computer-based processes. In contrast, he also, at times it's said, explored the intersection of art, language, and spirituality in his paintings.
In a similar and possibly insightful paradox, he studied at the Academie Julian as well as the Institute of Design in Chicago. The former was a bastion of academic tradition founded in 1868. The latter was an institution of modern, radical experimentation immersed in abstraction and emphasizing the integration of art with technology.
The unusual work from 1948 up for auction here is a product of the artist's more scientific attitude towards art.
