RONALD SLOWINSKI (1932-2023) ACRYLIC ON CANVAS

10: RONALD SLOWINSKI (1932-2023) ACRYLIC ON CANVAS

Ron Slowinski (1932-2023)
Black Protection (1983)
The striking near-black example from Ron Slowinski's Pollen series is signed and dated verso.

This example is more quiet and pensive than some. Its nebular depth evokes formation, a basic quality of pollen. It emanates its light from a deeper place than most of the works in this series while shedding the spirituality and floating energy of pollen in nature with more ethereal depth. Experiential like all of Slowinski's works, the vision here comes and goes before one's eyes.

In most Native American cultures, pollen, especially that of the corn plant, is considered sacred, possessing life force qualities and a connection to Holy people and spirits.

Of his Pollen series, Ron said 'The Pollen Series paintings reflect my ongoing interest in surface, color and light. In Navajo religion pollen is a symbol for the life-giving quality of light.' Light that emerges from the depth of this canvas.

Ron Slowinski was professor of drawing and painting at the Kansas City Art Institute for 39 years. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, earning a Certificate of Art in painting in 1954. During the early 1950s, he became involved with a group of fellow abstract expressionist artists in Chicago and co-founded the groundbreaking Wells Street Gallery, where he held his first solo exhibition in 1957.

Throughout his career, Ron participated in more than 60 exhibitions across the United States and Japan, including at the Nelson-Atkins Museum. His work is held in numerous public and private collections, including the Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska, which presented a retrospective of his paintings in 1984.
