Marwan Kassab-Bachi (Syrian 1934-2016)
(Untitled) Melting Visage (1976)
The expressive portrait in watercolor on paper is painted on a sheet embossed with the blindstamp of Veritable Papier D'Arches Torchon and signed in pencil upper left with date of 1976. Further signed verso on the sheet and numbered 156.
Born in Damascus, Marwan, as he is most often known, began his formal studies at the University of Damascus in Arabic literature. In 1957 he settled in Berlin and began his career as a neo-expressionist painter. He is best known for his introspective and emotionally charged portraits, like the example here. His depictions are not only with a relatable gaze but simultaneously appear melting and project psychological depth.
Marwan has been described as one of the most important Arab painters of the 20th century.
