173: AUGUSTE ROUBILLE (1872-1955) MIXED MEDIA ILLUSTRATION
Auguste Jean B. Roubille (1872-1955)
Repopulation (Early 1900s)
This original mixed media artwork illustrated the cover of Canard Sauvage (French for Wild Duck), a satirical magazine active around 1903. Known for its wit, social critique, and richly illustrated lithographic covers, it was published in Paris by Edmond Sagot, a well-known print dealer and publisher of avant-garde journals.
This is almost certainly a satirical response to France's declining birthrate and concerns about national strength in the post-1870 period, and or a commentary on social types and the bourgeoisie. The notation says something like, ''all begin to multiply again'' and text acrross the bottom in ink reads, ''It is rarely by his children that one recognizes a good Frenchman and good citizen.'' Clearly satirical commentary on the repopulation mandate by the French senate.
Image measures 10 x 8.5, sheet is 11.5H x 9.75W inches.
Good condition as shown.
