Sidney Miller Wiggins (1881-1940)
Harbour Scene (Early 20th Century.)
The subdued harbor scene with gulls in the air and boats at rest is sign lower right front.
Sidney Wiggins trained at the Yale School of Fine Arts under George de Forest Brush and later at the Art Students League in New York with William Merritt Chase and Frank DuMond, developing his Impressionistic sensibilities.
Wiggins achieved notable recognition during his lifetime, exhibiting regularly at prestigious institutions such as the National Academy of Design (where he was elected by fellow artists to Associate in 1926 and a full Academician in 1936), the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Art Institute of Chicago. His works often capture the charm of New England like this example, probably of Gloucester.
Canvas measures 16 x 20 with a framed size of 18.5H x 22.5W x 2.5D inches.
Very good condition, noting light soiling and a small bit of loss.
