The oil on canvas depiction of Washington Square is signed lower right front and titled verso.

The Washington Square Arch located on Fifth Avenue in Washington Square Park, Greenwich Village, Manhattan, was a favorite subject of the artist.

Arthur Clifton Goodwin was a self-taught American Impressionist celebrated for his depictions of Boston and New York City at the turn of the 20th century. He began painting around the age of 30 and, despite lacking formal training, he developed a distinctive style characterized by spontaneous brushwork and an ability to sensitively depict light and atmosphere.

The arch stands at the northern entrance to Washington Park, where Fifth Avenue, framing the southern view down Fifth Avenue. It was constructed in 1892, perhaps not long before this painting was made.
Canvas measures 20 x 24 with a framed size of 25.75H x 30W inches.
Very good untouched condition. There are no issues of scratches, losses, repairs, in-painting or touch-up as confirmed under UV light.
Provenance: Private collection, Kansas City, Missouri.
