Katherine (Goldsmith) Von Minckwitz (1903-1954)
The Newlyweds (Circa 1935.)
The spirited 1930s American scene painting of a working-class wedding is signed on the lower right front and the lower left. A study in graphite and india ink is verso.
Catherine von Minckwitz was an American painter, muralist, sculptor, and educator whose work often captured the spirit of everyday life, much like her mentor John Sloan.
Working primarily in oil and gouache, Katherine Von Minckwitz specialized in genre and figurative scenes rendered in a modern representational style characteristic of the WPA era of the 1930s and 1940s. Her compositions often depicted the American scene with warmth, humor, and a keen eye for social nuance.
She studied at the University of Nebraska and the University of Minnesota, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Art Students League in New York under Ashcan school founder John Sloan.
Around the time of this work and throughout the last half of the 1930s, she was employed by the WPA's Federal Arts Project.
