153: CHARLES BANKS WILSON (1918-2013) PENCIL SIGNED LITHO
Charles Banks Wison (1918-2013)
Afternoon Dance (1940)
The rare early lithograph, numbered 7 from a very low edition of only 16 total prints pulled, is signed and dated by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and titled lower left.
This marks the only the second appearance of this rare lithograph at auction. It compares very favorably to the example of this image we sold last September. This example does not have the same margin widths as that previous example. This print has never been framed and does not have tape, hinge or mount considerations.
These images that document authentic Native American traditions, ceremonies and culture, like this 1930s Powwow, are important and desirable. Charles Banks Wilson personally bore witness to the events he portrayed in art. Add to this the rarity of this low edition print and it confirms that this image is both rare and desirable. Unframed.
Image measures 10.25 x 13.5, sheet is 12.25H x 18.75W inches.
Very good condition, wide margins on each end, presumably the original margins top and bottom, not laid down, no stain or punctures, no repair, there is a 1/4 inch edge tear, unframed.
Provenance: A private Kansas collection, purchased directly from the artist.
$1,500 - $2,000
