157: LYMAN BYXBE (1886-1980) RARE PENCIL SIGNED ETCHING
Lyman Byxbe (Colorado, 1886-1980)
Tanglewood (1933)
The rare and atypically large etching is signed by Lyman Byxbe in pencil below the image lower right and titled lower left. It has been published in The Prints of Lyman Byxbe (1886-1980): A Catalog Raisonne by Robert L. Crump.Crump supposes that this was from an early edition that was reworked later when the plate lost its burr, suggesting that the technique is drypoint, though the catalog lists it as an etching. This fine and clean example has been archivally matted and framed in a sharp black molding.
To the best of our knowledge, this marks the first appearance of this extremely rare lithograph at auction, or anywhere for sale that we can find. According to all four major art auction record databases and entries on the major online bidding platforms it has never been up for bid. This may be the only opportunity one has to obtain this important print, particularly in this condition.
Lyman Byxbe was an artist as well as something of an etching technician who, unlike most artists, prepared his own copper plates and printed much of his work himself. He was also something of a showman who welcomed visitors in his studio to witness the printing process and watch him inking plates and pulling prints. He was deeply invested in the technical side of etching and became well-known for careful line work and the tonal control of his aquatints.
Image measures 7 x 5 with a framed size of 18H x 14W inches.
