The near miniature expressionist image of a cowboy on horseback working cattle is signed lower right.
Fred Darge settled in Texas after his studies at the Art Institute of Chicago during the 1930s. He began traveling extensively across the region in a self-made mobile studio, painting en plein air. His oil paintings, often on panel like the example up for bid here, captured cowboys, Native American life, and the expansive terrain of West Texas and New Mexico. His work is represented in the collections of the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum and the Texas State Capitol.
Sight size measures 4.25 x 5 with a framed size of 9H x 10W inches.
Very good original untouched condition. There are no issues of scratches, losses, repairs, in-painting or touch-up.
Provenance: Longtime private collection, Southeast Kansas.
