176: NW COAST MODEL TOTEM ATTRIBUTED DON SMITH (1933-1996)
The carved softwood model totem in traditional colors is attributed to Chief Lelooska (Don Smith, 1933-1996), a well-known carver and performer who was of Cherokee descent but adopted by a Kwakwaka'wakw family and trained in Northwest Coast carving traditions. This model is comprised of stacked crest figures including an owl at top, two figures each holding a ceremonial copper, the Northwest Coast emblem of wealth and status, and animal forms below. In Northwest Coast tradition, a ''copper'' is a shield-shaped emblem of hammered metal, symbolizing wealth, status, and hereditary privilege. No signature found.
Measures 20 inches.
Very good original untouched condition. There are no issues of major scratches, losses, repairs, in-painting or touch-up.
