11: A RARE 1886 FLORENCE MISSOURI STONEWARE WHIMSY

A very rare Missouri stoneware scuttle mug with scratch decoration created at the Hummel Stoneware factory of Florence, Missouri in 1886. German immigrant John M. Hummel started his stoneware kiln in Morgan County Missouri sometime around 1880. Signed examples of his ware are uncommon and usually from the late period though locals know his work by its individual characteristics. Scratch decorated works from this pottery are very rare though some signed by John are known. To the best of our knowledge this is the only known example signed by John Hummel's son Benjamin. This mug is signed and dated twice. The front reads 'B.P. Hummel Florence, Mo" framed by two whimsical leafy branch designs all scratched before firing. The base reads "B. P. Hummel Florence Mo May 4, 86". The height is 2.5 inches and the distance from end of handle to outside of front opening is 4.75 inches. This is a rare and desirable stoneware whimsy whether Missouri or otherwise.
Excellent condition. There are no chips, cracks, repairs, scratches or flaws excepting one kiln kiss at the top rim.
