ART NOUVEAU ESCRITOIRE ATTR JOAN BUSQUETS I JANE

5: ART NOUVEAU ESCRITOIRE ATTR JOAN BUSQUETS I JANE

Joan Busquets I Jane (Spain 1874-1949)
(1900 - 1910)
The rare and important example of Catalan 'Modernisme' is attributed to the designer and architect Joan Busquets I Jane of Barcelona, Spain, and clearly related to the influential art and design movements referred to as Art Nouveau in France, Jugendstil in Germany, and, to a lesser degree, Vienna Secession in Austria-Hungary at the turn of the 20th century. This rosewood example with curvilinear lines of the Art Nouveau movement is comprised of a deep case having a hinged front with rich burls and a hand painted cartouche above an open lower shelf backed by matching bird's eye patterned veneers within a flowing rosewood framework accented in gilt highlights, the whole raised on delicate downswept saber-like legs, all surfaces are further decorated in organic motifs and scrolls carved from rosewood and embellished in gold.

See an example of furniture by Joan Busquets I Jane in Palacio Güell. Barcelona, Spain for identical carvings and painted panels.
Measures 72 x 44 x 16 inches.
Very good, sturdy condition, noting an old repair to one joint on the proper left side where the leg meets the case, very good original condition free from other damage, wear or repair, some gold wear.
$2,000 - $3,000
