4: RON SLOWINSKI (1932-2023) UNUSUAL POLLEN SERIES CANVAS
Ron Slowinski (1932-2023)
(Untitled) Pollen Series with Structure
This unusual Pollen Series example is signed and dated verso.
Ron Slowinski's popular, experiential Pollen Series paintings rarely include designs of geometry. In addition to the pleasing depth, texture and random expressions typically found in these works; this example incorporates a subtle rectilinear reserve set apart from the field of color. This faintly articulated zone plays the part of window, implied structure, an aside of some sort. There are many possibilities here for the viewer. And again, Ron finished the canvas in such a way that framing seems optional. To do so would lose his expressions at the lower left and right corners.
Ron earned a certificate in painting from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1954 and had his first one person show in 1957 at the famed Wells St. Gallery. This newly established avant-garde exhibition space was founded by, and showcased the works of, some of the city's youngest and most advanced abstractionists of the time. Artists including Robert Natkin and John Chamberlain. Ron considered those post-war years in Chicago, where he worked solely at making art, to be his equivalent of grad school. He would go on to teach at the Kansas City Art Institute for 39 years and participate in more than 60 exhibitions of his work, 25 or more being one person shows.
