Ralph Oberg began his career in the 1970s, focusing on detailed watercolors of birds and mammals. Inspired by the field sketches of Carl Rungius, Oberg recognized the importance of painting en plein air to authentically capture the interplay of light and color in natural settings. To this end he sought instruction from the modern masters Wayne Wolfe, Clyde Aspevig, and Len Chmiel.

Ralph Oberg has been recognized with the Wilson Hurley Memorial Award for Landscape at the Prix de West Invitational, National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, Oklahoma City. Purchase Award at the Night of Artists, Briscoe Western Art Museum. Wells Fargo Gold Award at the Buffalo Bill Art Show & Sale, Cody, Wyoming. Also the 2014 Gold Medal for Painting at the California Art Club's 103rd Gold Medal Exhibition and the 2012 Trustees Purchase Award at the Western Visions Show, National Museum of Wildlife Art, Jackson, Wyoming.

His works have been exhibited at the Masters of the American West at the Autry Museum, the Eiteljorg Museum's Quest for the West, and the National Museum of Wildlife Art's Western Visions Show.

Oberg is a member of Plein Air Painters of America, Society of Animal Artists, Northwest Rendezvous Group.

The artist resides in Montrose, Colorado and shares a studio with his wife, painter Shirley Novak.
